Maruti Ertiga Review by AutoXion

Will the new Ertiga be able to break its old image and even further, will it be able to break the mindset regarding Indian customer's MUV, we have tried to find out in this test ride report:

Overview

  • Petrol engine: 1.5 liter
  • power: 103 bhp
  • torque: 138 Nm
  • Diesel Engine: 1.3 Liter
  • Power: 89 Bhp
  • Torque: 200 Nm
  • Price: 7.44 to 10.90 Lakhs (Ex-showroom)
Maruti Suzuki tried to give people such a car in 2013 when the Ertiga was launched. In which 7 people can travel together. In terms of sales, this vehicle can be called a hit because in terms of sales, if an MUV competed with Toyota's Innova, it was the Ertiga. However, it did not prove itself as a family vehicle. In this, the thinking of some Indian customers can be attributed to one or two shortcomings of some Ertiga. Now when Maruti has introduced a new Ertiga, it has tried to remove all the loopholes in it which were preventing it from becoming a family car.

The new Ertiga is bigger and spacious than before, looks premium, the interior is completely new and trendy, has more features and a new and more powerful petrol engine has also been given. Despite all this, there is no significant difference in the price. Will the new Ertiga be able to break its old image and even further, will it be able to break the mindset regarding Indian customer's MUV, we have tried to find out in this test ride report:

Exterior Design

At first glance, you are convinced that it is a premium looking vehicle. Chrome has been used heavily in the front which has become a measure of premiumness nowadays. The good thing is that the hard work has been done on the side and back profiles as well. Especially the black sea-pillar works to give it a different character. The design of the back may seem more complex to some people, but it will surely be a favorite for the youth, especially its backlights that seem inspired by Volvo's cars. Overall, it looks like a new vehicle but don't look for the boldness of the SUV. Based on a new-age MUV, its design can be given good numbers.

Interior

Good thing is that this time the interior has received a lot of attention. Especially the design of the dashboard attracts you a lot. The dash board is smart, practical and looks premium too. However the plastic quality can be improved further. The leather wrapped steering wheel in the top model also gives the feel of luxury cars. The large window panes help to give a large car feel even in the cabin of this compact MUV.

Space

Front and second row seats were and still are comfortable before. Here we will mention the third row, so the amount of space that two riders get in the third row of this car, it is not available in many trains on the big side. Third Row has plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for two big people. If the front passengers adjust a little by sliding the fused and second row, then 7 people can travel a long way comfortably in this car. This thing makes this vehicle very special because it is a big thing to get such good seating space in this size car. In addition, third row can be reclined and made comfortable. However, in the second row here you do not get the option of Captain seat which is found in many other MUVs. The boot space also now gets 209 liters after sitting for 7 people, which can comfortably carry two bags.

Power and performance

The company has given it the same old Tried and tested diesel engine of 1.3 liters which gives power of 89 Bhp and 200 Nm of torque. The mileage of 25.47 kmpl is claimed according to ARAI. In this case, if the running cost is to be kept low, then this option will prove to be better. Maruti has given a new 1.5 liter petrol engine in the new Ertiga, which is more powerful than before. The special thing is that in addition to the 5 speed manual, you also get a 4 speed automatic transmission. 19.34 in manual and 18 in automatic. The mileage of 69 kmpl is claimed. Talking about real life power, the diesel engine gives decent power in the city, but you may feel a bit of power while doing high speed overtaking on the highway. The power of the petrol engine is also decent and its automatic transmission makes it a very easy car to drive in the city. However, lowering mileage here increases your running cost. As far as comfort and handling is concerned, we drove from this highway to the pothole roads and there was no complaint in both the cases.

Features

Smart Hybrid system has also been given in the car, which was seen earlier in the new Ciaz. A double lithium-ion battery is provided in this double battery system that helps the engine to deliver torque. The list of features is also quite long. Safety features such as dual airbags and ABS-EBD are standard. The top variants have features such as push button start, clamat control, auto AC, air-cooled cup holder, day-night IRVM, electrical adjustable and foldable ORVM. The 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system has Android Auto and Apple Car Play, its sound quality is also good. Some features seem to be lacking such as projector headlamps are provided but LED headlamps are not available, AC vents are not available in third row, DRLs are also becoming standard nowadays but are not available in this vehicle.

Who will compete?

The car will compete directly with MUVs like Mahindra Marazzo, Honda BRV and Renault Logi, but its top variant can also be consented by those who are planning to buy Toyota Innova or Tata Hexa for the family.
